Flederhaus - An entire building of hammocks!

A genius idea that I thought only existed in my wildest imagination but then poof... there it is. I am loving this Flederhaus (translation - 'bat house') building in Vienna, Austria dedicated to hanging hammocks! From what I understand it is a free public space that anyone can come to hang out in the MQ Vorplatz near the Museums Quarter open daily 10:00-19:00 until October. Pretty much hammock paradise. Check out your pretty view of the surrounding buildings too. Would you kick back and take a break there?

Weekend Snaps + Inspiration is Everywhere

I hope you had a nice weekend, I am working on getting back into the groove. Here are some random snaps from the last few days. I always love coming across unique things that inspire me while traveling. Fluffy clouds, hand painted signs, quirky animal statues, and more.

For this trip I had to throw out my old trick book of traveling with one child, because traveling with two little ones (especially our spicy little red head) put a whole new swing on things for us, as I'm sure you well-experienced parents with 1+ kids know. A big hat tip to all you traveling families out there, I've got to come up with some new tricks!

Happy Tuesday.

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday! I had people guess what airport we landed in with a photo of this awesome installation I shared on twitter and people guessed right, pretty quickly. Do you have an idea? If you do know, do you have tips for the area?

Have a great weekend!

From Sea to Shining Sea...

The new silkscreened American flags map from These Are Things is really rad. Those fun colors, patterns and cute flags... just looking at it makes me want to plan a road trip! The European touring maps are something I've had on my wish list too. Ah maps, why do you get me every. single. time.

Keep growing... keep living...

This video clip by Gnarly Bay inspires me to ...

1 - Put a trip to Cambodia and Thailand closer to the top of my dream trip lists. (I often ask well-traveled people where some of their favorite places have been and the two places that I hear over and over again are Cambodia and New Zealand.) What about you -- do you have a favorite trip?

2 - The clip also makes me want to use the video camera more in general. How often are you making video clips?

3- Lastly I love the reminder that our world is in constant motion and alive and we need to keep evolving, growing, living. What do you think?

Bouchon Bistro

My husband and I are currently on a little vacation, our first getaway in well over a year! We are celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary and since we had to stay fairly close to home due to my husband's job (he could be called back at any time) we decided to hop on down to Vegas. Yesterday we went to brunch at Thomas Keller's Bouchon and it has to be one of my favorite spots in this sparkly, over the top town. It is very elegant and I loved the charming French paintings on the wall. Oh and the food --  amazing! I've had this place on my list for quite a while and last time I thought the kiosk bakery was it, but I'm very happy to find out there is an actual bistro thanks to Bonnie. We will definitely be hitting this spot every time we come this way. What are your favorite must-hit spots in or near Vegas?

A Free Food and Travel Photography Class with Penny De Los Santos

The Power of Food Photography from Penny De Los Santos on Vimeo.

Penny De Los Santos moves people.

If you love food and travel photography like I do, watch the video above and tell me this isn't the most inspiring piece you have seen in a while.

I get this way every time I get to spend time with Penny. I was lucky to have her teach a workshop here last year and ever since, she has become a close friend. She is a constant source of inspiration for me, both personally and professionally. I have seen the effect she has on others as well.

Everyone is swept away by her passion and commitment. I witnessed it last year at BlogHer Food where she received a standing ovation after her session. Remarkable.

And all this to tell you that you could also be a part of all this, and for FREE!

Penny is teaching a FREE 3-day class in Seattle beginning on May 13th at 10am PST (hosted by Creative Live). She is looking for a few audience members to attend the class so if you are interested, please watch her video or visit her post for more details. The class will also be live-streamed, so if you cannot attend in person, you could follow online.

This really is a tremendous opportunity and a gift to all of us. I hope you can join!

Have an outstanding weekend!

I took a spontaneous road trip with the girls this week (meeting up with Mac who was on a business trip) and the 80 degree weather and sitting by the pool for a few days is exactly what we needed. Over the next few days remember to enter this giveaway and to enter this giveaway for your chance to get clean with Martha and Method if you would like. I hope you will all have an outstanding weekend!

Today I came across the inspiring photos of renowned German photographer F.C. Gundlach from the 1960s. If you are in Germany there is currently an exhibit running at the Neue Museum Nürnberg through June, you can read about it here.

Spring & Its Tutti Frutti Crumble

It was about two months ago when I received a phone call from Loren, my uncle in law. Loren and Jan live in Wenatchee, Washington where they are surrounded by cherry and apple orchards. "I am going to send you a few cherry blossom branches" he said. "Cherry blossom branches? But how?".

A few days later a package arrived in the mail. Tightly wrapped and with very specific instructions, there were four cherry branches. "Cut the ends and place them in water. They will bloom in a few days".

And indeed they did. Tiny little white flowers that reminded me of the blossoming trees back home.

This little gesture planted a seed in my mind. I got excited about the idea of being able to see these trees in person. "We should take a trip while my parents are here and visit cherry blossoms. It would be a wonderful family vacation before they leave" I suggested to C.

I knew the kids would love it.

I really wanted to go visit Loren and Jan in Wenatchee, but a trip to Washington state was just not practical considering it takes a whole day to get there and back. "How about Washington DC?". And so we found the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

We spent last weekend there. at "George Washington CD" as J calls it.

I welcomed the wintery cold.

Beautiful flowering trees all around the Tidal Basin. Dad and I walked around the entire basin by ourselves. He had his arm around my shoulder just as he used to do when we were kids. I cherished every second of it.

Then back home, I dreamt of the wild poppies that grew in the field next to our school and blossoming apple trees.

I received my copy of Heidi's "Super Natural Cooking". I had been waiting so anxiously since I had pre-ordered it months ago. Beautiful as I expected and filled with recipes I want to cook and eat.

"Look at that crumble" I said to my mom as we were flipping through the book. Heidi's tutti frutti crumble filled with berries, oats and poppy seeds. I made a gluten and dairy free version on Saturday for our last dinner with my parents. It was delicious, light and the perfect way to put an end to a wonderful visit. I miss them already.

And then, I have to thank all of you for your kind words and excitement over the workshop in France this upcoming October. Stephanie is working on some additional details as we speak (she is in France at the moment!), and then, we will post a brief notice a few days prior to opening registration to the public.

Thank you and stay tuned!

Tutti Frutti Crumble

adapted from Heidi Swanson's "Super Natural Everyday"

1/2 cup superfine brown rice flour
1/4 cup oat flour
1 Tbs potato starch
2 Tbs poppy seeds
1/2 cup gluten-free oats
1/2 cup natural cane sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup melted coconut oil (do not microwave it, melt it over water bath)

Mix all ingredients together in a bowl until it comes together. Divide the dough into three parts and form patties. Freeze them for 10 minutes.

1 1/2 cups diced strawberries
1 1/2 cups diced rhubarb
1 1/2 cups golden raspberries
1 Tbs cornstarch
1/3 cup natural cane sugar
1/4 cup Beaujolais

Toss the first five ingredients together in a bowl. Let the fruit macerate for 10 minutes. Add the wine and gently mix.

Transfer the filling to a 10" pie plate or divide it amongst individual ramekins. remove the crumble patties from the freezer and break them over the fruit leaving some chunkier pieces.

Bake at 375F until the fruit is bubbling and the topping is golden brown, about 30 to 40 minutes.

Gardens of Marqueyssac

Daydreaming of a vacation right about now... A few summers ago I was in the Dordogne region and had the opportunity to tour the stunning Gardens of Marqueyssac with my friend Stephanie. Unfortunately I lost my photos of this dazzling and magical place --but we saw peacocks on the rooftops, listened to various little French musical groups play throughout the gardens and we both seriously weathered the thunderstorm of our lives, it was one of my favorite French experiences! Are you going on a vacation or holiday this year? What has been your most memorable vacation moment/place? We are brainstorming for ideas to put on our list ...

Cave Hotel

There is something quite surreal and mysterious about people who used to live in caves and places carved out of rocks back in the day. I've always been fascinated by them especially after seeing caves while traveling to Petra in Jordan. Three cheers for the Yunak Evleri Cave Hotel in Turkey, so quirky and interesting, this is going into my travel files. Would you stay here?
